Signs it is Time to Replace Your Window Blinds
Blinds are like any home furnishing, eventually they need replacing. Depending on what you buy and how you care for them, blinds can last for many years before they need to be changed.
However, knowing it is time to replace blinds isn’t always obvious, especially if they have been there for so long you fail to notice any problems – some people wait more than ten years before thinking about changing their blinds.
There are many signs that it is time to replace window blinds. Some are noticeable while others are not as clear, so it helps to take a closer look at your blinds to check their condition and whether they need replaced.
Look out for any of the following signs:
Warping and Bending
If you have venetian or wooden blinds, one of the clearest signs they need replaced is warping or bending in the slats. For example, wooden blinds are susceptible to warping when exposed to too much moisture, which is quite significant damage and a clear sign they need changed.
With metal or plastic venetian blinds, bending is more likely to occur over time, especially if you have kids or pets. Bends aren’t always clear in some cases, so be sure to raise the blinds to see if they sit properly – those that don’t need replaced.
Difficulty Raising and Lowering
Whenever blinds become difficult to lower and raise, it’s another sign something is wrong. In most instances, the lifting mechanism is damage to the point it struggles to function, making it difficult to lower and raise the blinds.
This is quite an obvious sign, as it impairs the functionality of the blinds, so most people should be aware of it. It’s certainly worth addressing, as not being able to move blinds makes them far less useful!
Discolouration
Whether you have blinds with fabrics or slats, they all end up discoloured at some stage. This is to be expected given their exposure to sunlight, although newer blinds are offering better protection against UV rays.
There is also a chance they become yellowed over time should you or someone in your house smoke. This can also occur in rooms where the blinds are exposed to more elements, namely the kitchen.
Check and see the colour of your blinds to clarify whether they need replaced – it’s worth getting UV protection in your new blinds to ensure the colour last much longer!
